“I talked to my parents. To Tanner. To Shane.” My voice fades off as the disbelief I have to take stock and let him know the damage control I’ve done takes hold. Unsure how to respond to me when he’s always so sure, he just nods his head as our eyes hold steadfast. “I just don’t know…” My voice is so soft, it sounds so very different than the storm of anger that rages inside me, and yet I can’t find it within me to show my emotions. I can feel his fingers tense from my comment, see his Adam’s apple bob from the forced swallow, and notice the tick of muscle as he clenches his jaw.

“We’ll get through this.”

The condescending chuckle falls from my lips, the first break in my fraudulent façade because it’s so damn easy for him to say. “I know.” Voice back, emotion nonexistent, tone unsure.

Colton stares, willing me to say more but I don’t. I just match him stare for

hollow stare as images of myself from Google flickering through my mind. Finally he breaks out connection and reaches his fingers to pinch the bridge of his nose before blowing out a sigh.

“Scream at me, Ry. Yell. Rage. Take it out on me. Do anything but be silent because I can’t handle when you’re silent with me,” he pleads. All I can do is shake my head, dig down within myself to will the emotion to come. When I can’t find the words or the feeling behind them, it unnerves him, worries him. “I’m sorry, baby. Were we stupid? Maybe. Do I regret it?” He shakes his head. “I regret all of this, yes, but that in general? No. So many damn things happened that put you and me where we are now. So for that? I’m not sorry. You pushed me that night, made me question if I could give someone more of myself.” He reaches his free hand up to brush a thumb over the line of my jaw. His touch reassuring, his words helping soothe the sting of our situation.

“It’s not your fault,” I say, trying to ease the concern in his eyes.

“Maybe not directly . . . but I made you color outside of your perfectly constructed lines . . . do something against your nature, and look what happened. I’m so sorry. I wish I could make this right,” he says, dropping his head as he shakes his head in defeat. “All I can try to do is mitigate the damage. That’s it.” He throws his hands up. “It’s killing me because I can’t fix this.” The break in his voice and the tension in his body would have told me everything I needed to know even if he hadn’t uttered a sound.

I look at my achingly handsome husband, so distraught, so desperate to make wrongs right that aren’t his to be held responsible for. And seeing him as upset as I am makes me feel a little better and allows me to dig into the deep well of emotion. I finally find the words I need and want to tell him. The decisions I came to last night when I sat on the deck and considered the life-altering situation we were in.

“Stop. Please quit beating yourself up over this. I don’t blame you.” I pause, my teeth worrying my bottom lip as I put words to my thoughts and wait for him to hear that last sentence.

It said Parkers not Donatti’s. This wasn’t necessarily a threat from someone who knew that he and Rachel were in the witness protection program, hiding from the Grimaldi and Fabbri families. It could be someone who was losing business to the restaurant or tanning salon, both businesses Angelo and Rachel owned.

He tucked the card in the shorts he was wearing because despite the could be’s, he had a feeling it was a hit man looking for him and putting out a feeler.

The move here was no move at all. Any reaction would confirm that he, William Parker was, in fact, Angelo Donatti and that Eileen Simmons soon to be Parker was actually Rachel Stuart. So instead of calling the flower shop, or hunting down the pimple faced delivery boy like he wanted, Angelo did what his new identity William would do. He took the tray of chocolate-dipped strawberries from the refrigerator, left the bouquet of flowers on the counter, as if he’d forgotten it, and returned to Rachel, who’d just agreed to be his wife.

He was up the stairs with the tray and smiling already because he knew that when she ate the strawberries, she was going to make those teasing noises that he knew from experience also were made when she was loving his mouth, or hands on her body and waiting with anticipation for him to take her.

He pushed open their bedroom door and there was his Rachel. She was smiling in her sleep. Her full pink lips turned up at the corners. Her long golden blond hair was

on the pillow at her back and her evenly tanned skin looking just as smooth and silky as it felt.

It was almost picture perfect seeing his ring on her finger. The only flaw being her hand was splinted from being tortured by a man who had been desperately trying to find Angelo.

Rachel began to battle with the blankets as she always did and winced when she used her injured hand. Her long lashes fluttered, and she opened her blue eyes looking at her hand. Angelo decided right then as she spotted him that she didn’t need to know about the threat hanging over their heads. Rachel had been through enough already. He could carry this burden for the both of them.

Rachel scribbled a note and stuck it to the fridge. Angelo was asleep and the dark crescents beneath his eyes made it clear he needed rest. She ran her hand over the lush marble countertop of the kitchen with an excited smile.

The house was as good as any castle and Angelo had helped to build it with her in mind. After all they’d come through they were really going to have the happily ever after like in the fairytales. Smelling the roses on the counter she grinned fully letting the too big, ridiculous smile, fill her face. Rachel could not ever remember feeling as happy as she did in that moment. With a contented sigh she turned on her heel and headed for the front door.

It wasn’t until she was outside, and locked out of the house that she remembered she had not driven herself to the house, Don, Angelo’s friend had driven her.

She looked at her watch and found that it was after seven which meant Bella would be up. She found her number on her phone and selected it as she began the long stroll down the secluded street that led to her new home.

“So?” Bella answered her phone with the question. “What?” Rachel began but then realized that Bella and Penelope would be still waiting to hear. “Oh. William was at the house when I got here and he proposed!” Bella squealed in excitement on the other end. “I knew it!” “Hey if you come pick me up I’ll tell you all about it,” Rachel said. “Yeah, text me the address. I’m on my way out the front door right now,” she said and Rachel heard a kissing noise before she whispered to her husband Brick, “love you, you sexy beast.” Rachel grinned. “’Kay I’ll text you. Bye.”

She didn’t actually know the address so she used Google Maps to get directions to her current location on her cell and then waited picturing her clothes in that amazing closet Angelo had built for her.

Out of nowhere though, she suddenly heard the silence.

Rachel looked slowly around herself. She was on the edge of the lane that led to the

huge castle size home, that was a full block in distance behind her now and she was only halfway to the main road. There was green grass and an orchard on each side of the road. They were peach trees. Beyond them hedges so thick, no daylight peaked through with a height of ten feet. No birds. She swallowed and continued toward the road. There had been birds when she’d begun her walk up the lane. An uncomfortable sensitivity ran over her skin at the back of her neck. It felt like someone was watching her.

“Bad words,” I reiterate, giving her a serious look. “We do not repeat those words. Ever. And especially not in front of Mommy. Okay?”

“Oh God,” I groan.

“Breakfast, Belle!” I exclaim. “You want some Frozen cereal?” I say to distract her.

Cold.
All I can feel is a deep chill blanketing my body. My eyes open to complete
darkness as a voice calls to me. Its muffled tones send
shivers down my spine with every garbled word. A sense of familiarity floats
around me as its words become clearer.

“Run, Dani,” it pleas from beyond the black
veil shrouding the room. “Escape while you can,” it continues. Panic courses
through my veins. Where in the hell am I? Why can’t I see anything? The pleas

The voice’s call fades with each word. “You
need to get the hell out of here, Dani. You need to move. Find a wall and
escape,” I coach to myself. A cold chill of air sweeps into the darkness
encompassing me as I try to feel the place around me. My fingers plunge into a
dense, sticky liquid as I crawl forward causing my body to slide with each
movement. A hard surface is finally inching its way under my fingers.

 

Crawling upwards, I splay my hands against the
cool wall. “You’re on your feet, Dani. The hardest part is over now. Time to
find a door or a light switch, something to get us out of here,” my internal
coach continues.

 

Keeping close to the wall, I finally find a
switch. Flicking it upwards, the light shines brilliantly. As my eyes adjust to
the light, my hands come into my vision. A scream barrels out of my throat when
I see the sticky, red blood covering my hands and clothes. My heart races as I frantically wipe
the blood away. Blood begins to pool at my feet, inching toward me. Rushing
away from the blood, I fall backward into a solid, but warm obstacle. Before I
can turn around, hands grasp my arms as a person’s hot breath trails down my
neck.

ABOUT ME:

Carrie Anne Ward grew up in the seaside resort Clacton on sea in Essex, England, with her mum and two brothers until she was 16 years old. She then moved with her mother to Colchester (where she still lives to this day) and went on to study Art and Design at the Colchester institute. However, after recovering from the illness glandular fever, which meant she couldn’t finish her degree, she went out into the world to become a working class citizen and a glamour model on the side.

For many years she wrote stories in her spare time, mostly horrors or supernatural, but never felt the passion to take it further. Her love for literature at school didn’t, at that point, over take her love of Art, but as she grew older her passion in writing surpass any other desire she ever had.

I recoiled as I felt her blood hit my cheek, the deafening roar of my gun something that was becoming far too familiar. Allie hit the dirt before I’d even blinked, the force of the bullet sending her straight onto her back.

Above the steady drum of the rain, I heard movement outside. Jesus. Was she still alive? I opened the door as quietly as I could and slipped out, pressing it shut behind me. The rain was brutal, and I could barely see in front of me.
